How to use WordPress

Currently WordPress is one of the most popular web blogging software. It is the most common choice for blog users because it provides:

  • Ease of use and versatility. WordPress is suitable for just about anybody – from the absolute novice to the advanced programmer.
  • Feature-rich interface. WordPress has a rich text editor with advanced multimedia support;
  • Expandable. WordPress's community distributes a large number of modules for almost any popular website feature;
  • It is Open Source. It is free to install and use WordPress for your your site.

I first started using WordPress almost 5 years ago,  I quickly realized…I had a lot to learn. I was looking for a powerful, but non-intimidating
Content Management System (CMS) to manage data, and the WodPress PHP driven site seemed to be the answer.

Having had no experience with html or website coding, I immediately fell in love with the simplicity of the WordPress management screen.
It's simple administrative capabilities allow you to easily assign posts to categories, monitor comments, add plugins for even more capabilities,
and best of all, totally customize the look of your site. I no longer had to rely on prepackaged, or template site looks.

More on WordPress Functionality

The WordPress administration and management screens are impressive; however I have to admit the most impressive to me is the full functionality that WordPress has to offer, although there are benefits to understanding some basic HTML, you certainly don't have to know HTML.

The template files are in fact very clean and easy to read. And they make sense. It’s a modular style that can be mixed and matched to generate different pages. At the most basic, there is a header, sidebar, content, and footer template file, the core building blocks for a web page.

But also with the capabilities of the most complex, you can have 30+ headers to match 30+ different sidebars, and or 20+ different footers, and all this wrapped around one content template. Or for that matter any combination thereof, mixing 10+ content templates with 2 or more different headers, 3 or more different sidebars, and only one footer. To mix & match your website has never been easier.

The power of WordPress continues with the realization that plugins could easily be added to customize your site and content fast and easily. WordPress Plugins add features like related posts, keywords, comment spam blocking, gallery and photo exhibits, administration enhancements, technocratic tagging, tag clouds, backups, and even more.

Other, of the more intimidating CMS systems that is… just cannot compare to the power of WordPress and WordPress plugins.

If you are new to WordPress and looking for reasons to use WordPress as a CMS (content management system) in your new website,
let me give you some.

WordPress is….

1) Open Source Software
WordPress is an Open Source software which allows it to be used free of cost. You can use it on any kind of personal or commercial website without have to pay a single dime for it. It is built on PHP/MySQL (which is again Open Source) and licensed under GPL

You don’t really have to be experienced to use WordPress on your website. Nowadays most of the hosting companies provide the ability to install WordPress on your site at a single click of the mouse. The administration section is easy to navigate and its even easy to add articles/content to your website.

3) Themes Support

You will never run short of templates when using WordPress. If you don’t like the themes that come with the default installation of WordPress, you can hunt on the Internet and you will find thousands of free themes that you can download and use for your website. There are themes which can even make your website look like a regular site instead of a blog.

4) Plugins Extend Functionality

WordPress plugins allow you to do just about anything that you want and can be installed in a jiffy. For example, you want to paginate your blog posts, just look on Google and you can easily find the relevant plugin that will easily do the job for you.

WordPress is one software that follows all the Web Standards and keeps your blog or website compliant to all the rules that have to be followed when running a website.
